The volume of cargo handling at the seaport of Kaliningrad showed growth for the first time in three years

According to the results of 11 months of 2021, the volume of cargo transshipment of the seaport of Kaliningrad for the first time in three years, since 2018, showed an increase and amounted to more than 9.6 million tons, which was 0.5 % higher than the same figure in 2020.

It was possible to reverse the downward trend in terms of cargo transshipment, first of all, due to a significant increase in the processing of transit cargo in the seaport this year. The number of processed transit containers in the seaport of Kaliningrad for 11 months of this year increased by more than 5.5 times compared to the same period last year.

The increase in the indicators of transshipment of transit cargo in the seaport of Kaliningrad is almost 4-fold, from 155.4 to 751.8 thousand tons. The growth in volumes is due to the growing transit of containerized cargo through the seaport of Kaliningrad within the framework of the project "New Silk Road" from China to Western Europe.

It should be noted that the railway ferry complex of FSUE "Rosmorport" is actively involved in the processing of transit container cargo. A third of all transit containers handled in the seaport of Kaliningrad in the first 11 months of 2021 - almost 45.8 thousand TEU, handled at the railroad complex, which underlines its key role in the transit of containers. All container trains arriving in the Baltic cargo area of the seaport are handled on the FSUE “Rosmorport” non-public railway tracks located on the territory of the railway complex. They are used to transship containers to container carriers, as well as for waiting for containers arriving by sea.

FSUE "Rosmorport" together with the stevedoring companies of the seaport of Kaliningrad, transport companies (including JSC "Russian Railways"), as well as the operator of the German seaport Mukran carries out consistent work aimed at increasing the transit flow of container cargo through the sea port of Kaliningrad.

In particular, the North-Western Basin branch of FSUE "Rosmorport" is working on the issue of resuming the ferry line Baltiysk - Sassnitz using the new ferry Marshal Rokossovsky (CNF19M project) for transportation of transit container trains within the framework of "New Silk Road". The use of the ferry will reduce the time of cargo handling and, consequently, the total cost of transportation, since there will be no need for additional transshipment of containers from the car to the ship (and back) in the seaport of Kaliningrad.

In addition to the increase in transshipment of transit cargo, positive dynamics are demonstrated by the volumes of coaster cargoes transshipment delivered/sent via the Ust-Luga-Baltiysk ferry line, which continues to be one of the most important ways of cargo delivery from the main part of Russia to the Kaliningrad Region. For 11 months of 2021, the total volume of cargo handled by the ferry line increased from 956 thousand tons to more than 1 million tons (+ 8.83 %). Due to commissioning of two new ferries of CNF19M  project (Marshal Rokossovsky and General Chernyakhovsky) FSUE "Rosmorport" expects in the midterm additional increase in cargo traffic on this ferry line.

The subsequent promising growth in the volume of cargo transshipment through the seaport of Kaliningrad is associated, first of all, with the plans of large transport companies and shippers to further increase the container traffic along the China-Europe-China line, as well as with the attraction of new cargo flows to the Kaliningrad region, including the use of the recently opened terminal and logistics center "East-West" in Chernyakhovsk, Kaliningrad region.
